Self assessment diagnosis chart
The following chart is a quick self assessment guide to evaluate common problems with your fish.
Splashtastic advise that a microscopic examination should be carried out to confirm the diagnosis.
Symptoms Condition Treatment
Fine white spots on the body ( like grains of salt). "Ick" - White spot. Malachite Green
Fluffy White growths on the body,
possibly some green to brown discolouration.
Fungus Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde- Malachite mix
Rubbing or flicking against objects.
Small haemorrhages on the body or fins.
Opaque bluish film on the skin
Protozoan parasites such as Costia sp or Trichodina. Permanganate dip / bath.
Ulcers, sores, tail, mouth and fin rot.
Gasping excessive mucus, clamped fins with red veins, cloudy eyes, raised scales.
Bacterial infection.
External - Flukes ( monogenetic trematodes).
Ulcer Swab.
Wound Seal
Permanganate dip / bath. Formaldehyde. Gill Wash.
Red Haemorrhages at the base of the fins and around the anus. Bacterial septicaemia - internal. Permanganate dip / Bath.
Hard jelly like lumps all over the body. Fish pox / Carp pox Raise water temperature & Feed Koivits mixed into food.
Regular round lage white spots.. Viral tumours Use Koivits mixed into food.
Swollen protruding eyes, raised scales ( pineapple effect ) possible buoyanccy problem. Internal bacterial / virial complaint - "Dropsy" Isolate the fish to prevent spreading- dose the food with koivits. Baytril injections or Salt baths.
Visible protruding parasites or worms. Lice, anchor worms, leeches or internal nematodes. Touch the offending animals with a cotton bud dipped in a formaldehyde and malachite green mix.
Repeat daily as necessary and isolate in a formaldehyde and malachite mix or Acriflavin.
