Koi will accept many other foods some have a good nutritional value, where as some have none at all and may cause
harm to your fish. Peanuts should be avoided, koi and non ornamental carp will eat peanuts however they need to be prepared correctly and even this can be done wrongly so we will not cover the how to on this. Brown bread is an acceptable treat for your koi and should be rolled up to make suitable size pellets for the size of your fish. However do not use white bread, as this contains bleach and will do your fish no good at all.
Koi absolutly adore fresh prawns, whole prawns are best and the red pigment in the
shells acts as a very good colour enhancer. Feed as a treat once a month to aid that additional balance in the fishes diet any more than once a month will certainly make a dent in the shopping bill each week.
Koi also relish the oportunatly to eat many plants such as duckweed and other plants that are located in the pond with the exception of blanketweed. Blanket weed is to coarse for the koi to remove from the sides of the pond. Lettuce is a favourite with koi, large koi will happily tear off large pieces from a floating lettuce, but for smaller koi will require smaller individual leaves. Another popular treat is a sliced orange the koi will happily tear off the fruit which as with humans gives the fish a good vitamin boost. Remember a balanced diet will lead to a healthy fish, purchase good quality food and your fish will benefit.
