Feeding Sturgeon year round

Spring

In spring as the temperatures begin to rise you will find that your sturgeon, like any other fish, start to become more active. From then on they will need an increase from their winter food, which has been a maintenance diet. As sturgeon are most active around dawn and dusk this is the best time to feed. Little and  often is the rule rather than one large feed.

Summer

Over the summer months make sure that plenty of food is readily available as your sturgeon and other fish will be growing and need feeding well. Making sure there is enough food will decrease the competition in the pond, as fish such as Koi and other carp varieties will eat sturgeon food rather than their own. Siberians and Diamonds grow rapidly if conditions are favourable and in conjunction with the summer temperatures.

Autumn

During the autumn as temperatures begin to drop the sturgeon will be putting on weight in preperation for the cold winter months. Although the amount of food should be kept up, it is important to watch out for any that remains uneaten, this should be removed so as not to foul the water.

Winter

Your sturgeon will contiue to feed at temperatures down to 4 degrees C. So therefore it is important that you continue to feed over the winter. Most deaths during this time, and in early spring, are due to starvation. During the winter months feed sparingly and only if all the food is eaten add  some extra.
