World Crisis As Wildlife Numbers Plummet

Earth is a planet in crisis with wildlife populations declining by more than 30% in the past four decades, conservationists claim.

A new report examined how more than 9,000 populations of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and fish are faring.

It comes in the face of record over-consumption of natural resources with serious implications for human health, wealth and well-being.

Freshwater creatures in the tropics have seen the worst declines, of around 70%, while tropical species as a whole have seen populations tumble by 60% since 1970.

In Asia, tiger numbers have fallen 70% in just 30 years.

Wildlife is under pressure from ever-growing human demand for resources, the study by WWF , the latest Living Planet report from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and the Global Footprint Network said.

And research into demand for water revealed 2.7bn people live in areas that suffer severe water shortages for at least one month of the year.

People are exploiting resources such as water, forests and fisheries and putting greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere at a much higher rate than they can be replenished and pollution absorbed.

The "ecological footprint" of human activity was 50% higher than the capacity of the Earth's land and oceans in 2008, the most recent year for which figures are available, with people living as though we have a planet and a half to sustain us.

Rising population and consumption means that by 2030, two planets will not be enough to meet human demand, threatening the resources including food, freshwater and a stable climate that people need to survive, the report said.

WWF-UK's chief executive David Nussbaum said the underlying cause of declines in nature was the rate of human consumption.

"If you're relying on your annual account and you overspend, you eat into your savings until there's nothing left," he said.

"At the moment we are in danger of doing that with our life support system, Planet Earth."

He said the UK was living in the eye of the storm, without yet feeling the impacts of its over-consumption, but warned the "whirlwind of consumerism is whipping up and causing all sorts of damage".

The UK is 27th in the global rankings for how the ecological footprint of how each person in the country consumes, a five-place rise from the last report two years ago.

UK Temperatures to Plummet in May 2012

Just as we all thought we had seen the last of the winter it is forecast From Friday (4th May 2012) that temperatures will fall dramatically and many parts of Scotland will be more than 10C lower than currently. We could see some of the lowest May temperatures for many years this weekend with a widespread frost in rural areas across northern England and Scotland by Saturday morning, temperatures possibly below minus 5C in the Scottish Highlands. The risk of frost then extends south to much of the UK by Sunday morning with frost hollows dipping to below minus 3C in the south and minus 4 or 5C in the north. It is back to the pond covers and reduce any feedingn many koi keepers will even turn their pond heaters back on. Keep an eye on the temperatures in your ponds and if you are currently treating any fish problems keep in mind alot of treatments will not be beneficial in temperatures below 10 degrees Celcius.

British Koi Keepers Society Call Emergency General Meeting

Attention: open in a new window. The British Koi Keepers Society calls an emergency General meeting to be held on 15th April 2012 at Drayton Leisure Centre, Banbury OX17 1HJ beginning at 12 noon. The state of the BKKS is in terrible fortune, Splashtastic has duplicated the article from Russell to spread the word as much as we can to help the cause. For more info on what the BKKS is and does visit their website here.

Somebody at the meeting will have to be prepared to step into the position of Society Chairman and steer the Society via a new Council. Fortunately we do now have nominations for the following positions:

Chairman
Treasurer
Membership Secretary
Magazine Collator
Equipment Officer
Minutes Secretary

We need as many members as possible to attend this short but absolutely vital meeting. We MUST elect this new Council otherwise the Society will have to shut down. we cannot keep going without those roles being filled.

Splashtastic - Installation of diy indoor koi tank at KWS Chicago

Back in Chicago at the Koi Whisperer Sanctuary and decided MaryEllen Needed a bigger koi tank. The holiday season brings a tight budget but we managed and MaryEllen wrote up the article on the build for me. Looking forward to building the next three!!!!

The koi whisperer sanctuary is so proud to have had our UK partner back over to us here for the holidays. With the cold weather set in outside we got to work on the brand new show tank for 2012 which will be home to all our japanese imported nishikigoi ready for new homes this coming spring. Splashtastic Aquatics set to work on this tank and in an incredible 3 days working time it was complete with full paint job and its own filter system. We hope you like the images of progress of the build and how great the show tank really looks here in the sanctuary.

Timber construction planned to be 8 feet X 4 feet

Heading Back to Chicago.

It has been 3 weeks since I arrived back here in the UK and all is very quiet on the koi and sturgeon front. Many koi keepers are already installing the heating systems and winter pond covers, although the temperatures have remained rather mild it is a great opportunity to utilize the weather to get prepared for the onslaught of the ice and the snow we are sure to get soon enough. The most amazing news is Splash is going back to Chicago, yes i know 3 weeks back in England is enough for most people but after a very busy year it is the perfect time to take another vacation to the Koi Whisperer Sanctuary. Splash will be back in the new year and i would like to thank everyone for a brilliant year with the koi and sturgeon.  Please feel free to Email us with any help you may need, the world wide web works over the pond!!! also please do not forget your koi maybe sleeping but your sturgeon still needs its daily food intake. Sturgeon will continue to feed at temperatures down to 4 degrees C. So therefore it is important that you continue to feed over the winter. Most deaths during this time, and in early spring, are due to starvation. During the winter months feed sparingly and try to observe your fish as much as possible with the dark mornings and long dark nights.

We will see you all in the new year. Wishing you all a merry Christmas and happy new year.

Splashtastic - Back In the UK.

After the most amazing vacation with MaryEllen at the Koi Whisperer Sanctuary, I have eventually landed back here in the UK with the cold dark nights in the later days of October. It truely was an honour to be invited over to America and help at the koi whisperer sanctuary. Learning new techniques with the way their ponds are built and the different equipment is used over the sea, and learning on the different treatments and rules they have compared to the UK. It will be a long winter back here but plans to get back to the sanctuary are already in progress. Splashtastic Aquatics thanks all our visitors and wishes you all a very merry christmas and a happy new year.
