Feeding Koi

Good body shape is the single most important feature that judges and breeders look for in koi. It should be the priority of the fish keeper, who should aim to provide a well balanced diet that will build up the mucle, but not the fat, in the koi and enhance their colour. The Japanese say that a healthy koi is a hungry koi, even after feeding. This is certainly true, koi will always accept more than they can comfortably eat, and often become to fat, with potentially fatal results. Over feeding also will have dramatic effect on your water quality and filter system due to the increased amount of waste the fish will inevitably produce by large amounts of feed. The koi keeper needs to find that special balance, to where good body shape, growth and a healthy nutritional diet is maintained, without harming the fish or the biological systems in the water and filter.

Koi will eat a number of food types and in this section you will find the most popular used and a little about them and how and when they should be fed to your fish.

Brown bread is an acceptable treat for your koi and should be rolled up to make suitable size pellets for the size of your fish. However do not use white bread, as this contains bleach and will do your fish no good at all.
